Using a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant, I spent a summer in Stanford Materials Science Chairman Robert Sinclair’s research group. I collected the images seen above while investigating fractures on a retired football helmet. I practiced diverse sample preparation techniques, was certified on two different scanning electron microscopes, and learned how solid science gets put together.
